About Wasted Rita
During the course of her artistic practice Wasted Rita has been exploring her love-hate relationship with life and her surrounding world. Dubbing herself as a Natural Born Agent Provocateur, she likes to think, write and draw without filter, resulting in little gems of sarcastic wisdom dipped in acid which reflect on an unconventional upbringing in a Catholic school to the sounds of Black Flag. Her creative process ranges from sculptural objects, installations, paintings, drawings and writing, using her unique voice to give form to her mordant observations and poetic invectives on human behaviour and contemporary culture.

A little word from Rita…
"I was expelled from my house in December (I live in Lisbon where landlords expelling someone to rent or sell the house for five times more than the amount that the property is really worth is trending) and I went to Tenerife on the last days of January, coincidentally also the last days I had to find a house. So I went on this trip asking myself if I'd be able to put my rage and despair towards Lisbon’s habitation crisis aside and feel a glimpse of any other type of feeling in Tenerife.
In Tenerife I was pleasantly surprised by the volcanic landscape, especially when the sun lights up the mountains when everything else is grey, the weather being ok enough to go in the ocean, and one drunk British man trying to walk from a bar to his hotel room, that I had the privilege to assist (I offered him help twice but he refused).
I also tried Taki’s Fuego for the first time in my life and found out that it is so acidic that, while you are eating it, you're only able to focus on its acidity and forget everything else. Note: I bought a second bag of Taki’s that wasn't so acidic, so if you want to have the experience I just described, you need to buy your package in a small street shop, and only if the package is dusty and looks like it has been sitting there for more than ten years. Other things that also surprised me were: that various groups of retired British people in shorts and sandals with socks mentally always take me to a place that feels like home and also how getting around a new city with a very unreliable bus service can be so interesting.
The artwork I created resumes the desperation I in was while on this trip and what palm trees and a warmer than 20 celsius degrees weather can do for my mood. It is also a commentary on how capitalism messes you up to a point where you don’t feel worthy of sitting on a beach for more than five minutes. Your brain doesn't recognize this activity in January, and immediately sends signs to your entire body to start bubbling to make sure you feel uncomfortable and start at least thinking about everything you must do while looking at the sea."
