Lagos is one of the fastest grown cities in Africa, and if you look at the hustle and bustle all around the capital, it is no wonder. With its cultural export going worldwide in music, art and fashion, the city of Lagos makes for the perfect location to strike down for our fourth annual Jaunt Summer Camp.

A little word from Bisco…

“In life and in travels, I try to have as few expectations as possible. For this trip I trusted that The Jaunt, with all of their experience in organizing travels for artists, would provide a great time. Full trust. I was looking forward to seeing Lagos, a city that before this trip I hadn’t known much about. My experience was definitely more than I expected it to be, in all the right ways. The cultural differences were everywhere, and so were the similarities. For me it’s always the people who I remember, and we met so many good people in our short time in Nigeria. Linking with Seth Pimentel , and building on art and life was great for the soul. Furthermore, the Uber drivers, the hotel staff, the local artists we met, and the friends we made, that’s the gold. A Nigerian artist told me Lagos feels almost aesthetically post apocalyptic, but it’s the people that give it its light. I couldn’t agree more.

We didn’t have much time to let Lagos soak in before starting to work on our exhibition and mural, so I took inspiration from the travel to get to Lagos, flying in from Lisbon over Casablanca. On my first day I spotted a Agama gecko out back of the hotel that was a beautiful orange and black, and it felt right to use that color palette for the mural. It was a direct translation from the energy and these lizards I spotted at the hotel.

The print I created is titled “IBOYAMI (Journey Universal)”. I was thinking about everyone on their own journey and crossing through experiences and places. I tend to move through this whole life experience open and feeling like what’s ahead is unknown, because who really knows where the journey will go? One just has to trust the roads ahead.“
