About Cody Hudson
Working right in between the two worlds of art and design, Cody Hudson knows as no other how to create fine balance between the two. His use of graphic lines, compositions and a refined color palette makes his graphic design look like art, and vice versa. Exploring the elemental use of shapes is at the foreground of Cody’s work, trying to figure out how shapes can work together in perfect harmony. The shapes are elementary, but at the same time immensely complex, and Cody is here to make sense of it all.

Destination: Jeju Island, South Korea
Situated about a short 100km off the southern coast of South Korea is the largest island of South Korea, Jeju-do. It is a well known refuge for South Koreans who can enjoy its beautiful beaches and volcanic landscapes of craters, its semi-tropical national park and the world’s longest underground lava tube.

A little word from Cody…
"This was my third Jaunt trip, and I went into this one with an open mind and very little expectations. I did a little research about the island and looked into some areas to check out but didn’t want to plan too heavily so my days there would feel more open. In preparation for the trip I really tried to just clear out my schedule (and my head) for that week so I would have nothing to do but explore and make drawings.
This trip was all about the nature for me. I did lots of hiking and explored volcanic cones (orems), caves, walked along the shore a lot, checked out a temple, took in some beautiful sunsets and really just tried to enjoy my time outside. Just walking, listening to music and checking out local plants was another very mellow highlight. I really don’t get as much down time in my normal life as I’d like so this was a great week to relax and spend time outside.
I knew that Jeju was a volcanic island but hadn’t really thought about how much that affected everything on the island. So getting there and seeing so much made out of volcanic rock was great to see, the texture was everywhere I walked. All the sculptures and figures carved out of the same material were nice to see as well. I was also inspired by all the food plots in between the houses where I stayed and in the more rural areas I travelled through. It seemed like there was greens and plants to eat growing on every small piece of land they could find. The thick black stone fences surrounding the areas filled with green low growing plants had a really bold graphic feel to it.
The print I made is heavily inspired by the plant life on Jeju. It’s an abstracted plant growing out of the ground made out of cut paper shapes that I moved around and repeated into patterns and shapes. It’s also about growing, opening up and reaching towards the sun. There is some texture in the main area of the plant from one of the drawings I made on the island. It also feels very connected to the mono prints that I made the next week on a trip to Seoul for the Earth Island Works show with The Jaunt at Realation Space."
