A little word by Hedof…

“I love being in nature and I try to spend as much time as possible outside with my kids, visiting playgrounds, going to the nearby forest or going on a trail run once or twice a week. I have however, never made a trip focussed solely on nature. So I was pretty excited about something different from my usual city trip. It felt like being away from normal life, and going on an adventure.

Being absolutely alone in in our cabin was something that I don’t think I’ve experienced before. We spotted a few hikers here and there during our walks, but we never saw anyone near our cabin, which felt really special. I really enjoyed the concept of not needing much to be happy. Normally it is always, more, more, more. More sneakers, more toys, another streaming service, that extra portion of food. For this trip you only bring the things you absolutely need, because you have to carry everything yourself for 6 km. Thinking about your meal, chopping wood and pumping your own water for that 1 minute hot shower. It just really made me more aware and it is such a strong and valuable lesson to take back home.

I took my time to see how I could best translate my memories of the trip into a composition. I took a photo of my wife with a woolen blanket standing on the porch, looking into nature, and I really liked that image a lot. I thought about using this image for the print, but on second thought it felt more like a personal treasure.

My kids are really into bugs and other little animals at the moment so they spend the whole day looking for grasshoppers, frogs, caterpillars, beetles and whatever else they can find. On one of the days we saw a stork flying over the open spot in the forest where our cabin was. We also really hoped to see wild deer, since we read a lot about those in the Cabiner journal entries. Unfortunately we did not see any deer but the anticipation for the deer spotting, made me want to include it in the artwork anyways. Along with some other key elements of the trip; the heavy backpack, the teapot that I really liked, and the beautiful Foxglove flowers everywhere. I ended up visualising all of these memories and was able to put them them together into a composition, giving a visual diary of all of the experiences during our trip.”
