Bodil Jane
From her studio in Amsterdam, Bodil is creating colorful windows into the female world. Through her characters, she is portraying personalities that are recognizable to us all. With a personal love for flea markets and botanical gardens, it is no wonder how the works of Bodil Jane are composed of so much small and delicate details. Or as she puts it herself; My work is almost as if Frida Kahlo had lived in a world painted by Raoul Dufy, but Henri Matisse was on hand to help with the plants.

A little word by Bodil

The idea of not being able to go on the internet during my time in the cabin was so exciting to me. I was hoping that forgetting about my phone would motivate me to create some sketchbook drawings and study the all of the flora and fauna around me, and hoping for a clear sky so that I could see the stars at night. I expected that the hike to the cabin would be pretty tough, carrying a backpack, groceries and drinking water for my stay, and it was quite challenging for me, especially my arrival coincided with a heat wave. Half way on the hike however I saw two young deer. We had a bit of eye contact, and then they took off again with some beautiful and gracious jumps. It was lovely to experience this joyful nature moment right after arriving at de Drentsche Aa.

I was surprised by how fast I tuned out of my regular life and tuned in to this nature experience. From the moment I was surrounded by trees, I felt calm and forgot about everything at home. I loved looking at the foliage, animals and insects. So much to see, even just by sitting on the little porch of the cabin. It’s strange how nature can sometimes feel so far away when you live in the city. I almost tend to forget that it’s there, while it’s only a stones throw away.

During my stay I did a lot of plant and tree drawings in my sketchbook. I looked at some of the huge trees for a long time and loved the negative spaces between the huge branches. I really wanted to incorporate the clovers, as I had seen a million clovers along the path to the cabin! As a little girl I always read this fairytale about a girl who finds a field full of four leaf clovers and I never thought fields of clovers even existed. During my stay there were also beautiful purple heather fields in bloom, so I incorporated the purple calluna. During my last night, I was listening to some birds on the roof of the cabin, and I came up with the idea to create a large tree, almost like a family tree, with smaller scenes representing my experiences depicted in the negative spaces. Creating the family tree of my own experience in this cabin in the middle of nature.
